Post by Daisy Mon Dec 03, 2012 5:03 pm

So, I assume most of you members are going to go see this? Night Watchman (inactive member and my sister) and I are REALLY excited for this.

So. Here is a link to an image (it was too big and I didn't want to make it smaller)...comment on what you think of the dwarves, and please, when you reply say whether or not you've read the book.

    Dwarves-weird hair...

If you haven't seen Thorin or Bilbo, it would be easy enough to find an image. And we can talk about all the other film stuff like the fact that Galadriel will be in it or that PETA is protesting the film....unless I'm the only one looking forward to this in which case this thread will sit and gather dust. I've read it!
Kili looks like mini-Aragon, not nearly enough beard on his face.

It looks like they did a good job of making each dwarf have a distinct look, which ought to help individualize them. Though, the took away a good deal of the color. Each dwarf had a different colored hood, and Dwalin had a clue beard.

I know! I think they should have taken less beard liberties and stuck with colored hoods to tell them apart.
I like Bilbo though, I think they made good choices with him. And Thorin looks very...well, like Thorin.

I think Gandalf is going to leave the Dwarves and join up with the White Counsel, as the Counsel fights the "Necromancer," aka Sauron, for control of Mirkwood. Or some other Wood.

Yep. Nightwatchman is the one in our family who is up-to-date on all the Hobbit news and she says that is what they are going to do. Otherwise I don't know if the book could become a trilogy...

I'm looking forward to some entertaining dialogue among the dwarves Very Happy

And I don't think the movies will skip any parts of the book like LOTR, with a possible running time of 9 hours, if the next two are as long as this one.

But speaking of that, I'm wondering how far into the book the first movie will take us. If you know, DON'T tell me, I'm refusing to get any spoilers. I want to be totally shocked when it ends.

    Size 13/14, actually Wink

    OK, no spoilers.
    First off, it was good.
It didn't begin the way I thought it would, but that wasn't bad.

Honestly, I kind of disliked the portions that weren't straight out of the book, those parts make the film too epic, when one of the things I love about the Hobbit is that it's not epic.
But, it's definitely a good movie Very Happy
Lots of funny moments, deviations from the book all have a clear purpose, and Bilbo is fantastically Bilbo.

It's such a great movie, but I dareth not spoil it. Also it actually didn't feel as long as it actually was, I wished it would go longer.

I thought Kili looked like a mini Aragorn too! It's really odd because I kept thinking "oh, there's Aragorn." (Well... once or twice.)

@Kelcin: Wow, going bare foot would work then. Also, NightW said that most of the stuff not from the book is from the appendices (which confused me too b/c I never read the appendices). Although the troll scene did play out differently...

Okay, this movie was fantastic. More humor than LotR, which is right b/c it was a children's book. I only didn't like one thing
    Spoiler:
but other than that it was great. I think they captured Bilbo and Thorin perfectly in pretty much every way.

I really liked how they included so many songs from the books. So who were the favorite dwarves for you all?

(Also, I don't know how many of you are geeks like me, but the trailer for the next Star Trek looks really good.)

I'm a little sad about the next one being called the "Desolation of Smaug"...I kinda hoped that they would ramp up Smaug and he wouldn't die until the last one. Sad I guess the main conflict in the last one will be with the orcs.

True. And with the way Smaug dies...well, unless they change it, I don't think it's quite the epic end that the producers might want, or viewers for that matter.

Hey everyone! Just using my mums iPad for Internet, and thought this was an appropriate topic to post in since I saw the movie about a week ago and extremely liked it!
My favourite dwarf was definitely Thorin Oakenshield, he was just awesome. Overall, Gollum was my favourite character though. Also, I have never read the book so that was cool not knowing what was going to happen. tongue

Daisy, i think that the end of Smaug in the book is about what it should be in the movie, think, having arrows snap on his armor, then having a thrush fly and land on the guy's shoulder, who then puts an arrow in a small spot in the armor, then the dragon crashing down with great ruin on the town, starting houses and town on fire, and having a rising steam so thick that you can't see your hand in front of your face...

Josiah, i agree with you on the Thorin being the best dwarf, but even though Dine killed Azog in the goblin wars, he is my favorite character in the movie.

@Fasttune: Well, the way you put it, the death of Smaug sure sounds epic. In my view it was just Smaug accidently (in a way) getting killed by some guy you've never heard of and Bilbo and the Dwarves not really being there to have anything to do with it (if I remember correctly...it's been a while). But now that you've said it like that, it sounds screen worthy to me. Very Happy

@Josiah: Yeah, he's good at doing "epic". One of my sisters (who very much does not like action-fantasy) says the only reason she'll see that movie is because of him The Hobbit 148514.

@Daisy: He plays a really good (and epic) dwarf king; him and his shield (Tree branch) tongue

I really liked the scene where the (13?) dwarves were singing in Bilbo's living room by the fire. I thought that scene was awesome too Smile

Agreed. NightW bought the DVD, and the special features were very disappointing. There are the vlogs on there, but those are on the internet, so they aren't very "special".
